Writing Advice Friday

Good Evening Lovelies!!! I hope you all have had a wonderful week, I know I have… DESPITE it being a busy week. But that’s what we do right? Just roll with the punches and take it one day at a time.

Today I’m going to do something a little different. I do have a couple of quotes today, but we are going to discuss the subject matter regarding the quotes.

The subject of today’s quotes is…. FEAR.

“I’m convinced that fear is at the root of most bad writing.” -Stephen King

“It’s not the fear of writing that blocks people, it’s the fear of not writing well something quite different.” -Scott Berkun

Good Lord in Heaven… both of these quotes hit me like a wall of bricks. In my younger years, I allowed the minority to criticize my writing and thus, the fear of writing was developed.

I admit whole heartedly that it is no one’s fault but my own… immaturity had a big role to play. Sometimes constructive criticism was taken as straight criticism. Now (in my old age, LOL!), I find myself begging for someone to critique my work.

Don’t be like me and wait ten years to start writing again. Don’t allow others to get the better of you. One thing that I’ve learned over the years is not everyone is going to like you or support you… in other words “haters gonna hate.” We live in a day and age right now where people can be cruel to each other. Don’t allow bitter words or actions to keep you from doing something you love.

The fear of no one liking my writing drove me for a long time. Now, I just want to write. I don’t care what others think, I don’t care if I’m bad at it right now… I WANT TO WRITE. It took a long time for my skin to toughen up, but I supposed with age comes with wisdom… and the same level of tolerance for stupidity as Dorothy Zbornak.

That’s all for today, I hope today’s advice helped you all.

I will see you all next week with the next writing prompt!!!

Love, Leslie

My name is Leslie, and I am an aspiring writer. I love writing, it is definitely my biggest passion. I say aspiring because I've been writing since I was a child, but I am in NO WAY a pro. Someone once told me "If you stay a student, you will learn something new everyday"... and I have to say that mantra works. My dream is to be a published author one day, until then, I shall practice my creative writing with you all.
